Peter Stewart, Born December 1978, started his training under the instruction of the then N.I. National Coach Bruce Bamford.
He competed at several high ranking competitions setting many N.I and Irish records along the way.
A competitor at the Commonwealths in 2002, Peter finished in 8th place, one of the highest ranked competitors from N.I. to date.
This success only equalled by his place in the World University cup championships in Pavia Italy.
Peter also competed in several European Small Nations tournaments representing Ireland, gaining the best lifter award in during this time. He was also a pivotal member of the team competing in the now defunct
silver dragon competition.
He has also competed at british senior competitions placing 3rd.
Since then Peter moved to America, Snatching 108 and Clean and Jerking 137, before dislocating his shoulder in November 2007.
Pete now lifts in America and is an active member of Newtownabbey Weightlifting club. He has since begun his recovery, competing at the
Louisiana governor games nov 08, power snatching 84kg and Clean and Jerking 140kg.
Pete is a PhD graduate, from Queens University Belfast, and now trains in a strength and conditioning gym where he regularly helps coach the hang power clean.
Since July 2007, when he first joined the Gym, he has coached the next generation of weightlifter, comprising around 30-40 athletes.
Currently coaching two new athletes on the lifts, he has taken one to the Louisiana Governor Games (Jay Douglass) and the other to Hillbilly Classic (Nathan Tucker).
